Obukan Kata Competition Gresham, OR March 20, 2026

This Friday we had a team represent Shipyard Judo at the kata (forms) competition portion of the 70th annual Obukan tournament. Maria and Dizzy competed for their first time, in the Nage no Kata (Forms of Throwing) in the novice category. This means they only had to preform the first three sets out of five total sets. Each set consists of a group of throws such as hand techniques, hip techniques, and foot techniques, throwing each throw both right and left. The competed alongside four other teams and while they were unopposed in their division, they worked hard to prepare and got on the mat and did it. The took home gold and we are proud of them for getting out and representing Shipyard Judo.

Congratulations to the both of you.

While it was presented the next day and although they weren’t in attendance, Brynn and Haley won the prestigious Fukushima Sensei Kata Award for their exceptional year in kata competition. They won silver at nationals in the open division, won the Pan American Kata Championships in the under 21 division, and won the world championship in the under 21 division. This makes it the second time they have won this award.

Congratulations to the both of them as well.
