Obukan Tournament Gresham, OR March 21, 2026
This Saturday was the 70th annual Obukan tournament in the Portland area. This was our biggest group we have ever brought to a tournament at 23 total competitors, including 20 kids. Competing at their first tournament were Leandro, Emmitt, Sophia, Abbie, Remy, Iraia, Vincent, Liam, Aria, Chase, Brennan, Eleanor, Taylor, and Zoey. Our returning veterans were Kellen, Duke, Jasper, Channc (in two divisions), Julian, Rhett, and Coach Sabrina. Additionally the previous night Maria and Dizzy competed for the first time in kata (forms) competition. To round out Shipyard’s presence were Coach Tony, Coach Eric, Coach Clayton, and Coach Rob.
Everyone did an amazing job getting out on the mat and trying, especially those whose first tournament it was. Sophia went 2-2, making it to the bronze medal match. Rhett went 2-0 to win gold in his division and earned the fastest win of the tournament at 2.1 seconds. Julian went 2-1 to take silver in his division. Emmitt went 2-1 to win silver in his division. Liam went 2-2, making it to the bronze medal match in his division. Jasper went 1-2 to make it to the bronze medal match in his division. Sabrina went 1-1 to earn silver in the women’s black belt division. Channc fought in two divisions and ended up going 2-4 overall.
