Ju no Kata Clinic
Shipyard Judo’s very own Haley and Brynn Buskerud are putting on a Ju no Kata (Forms of Gentleness) clinic hosted by Best Martial Arts (http://www.bmai.org/) in Eugene, OR on Sunday, October 25th.
Brynn and Haley are three-time National Champions, two-time Pan-American champions, and the 2025 U21 World Champions in this kata (form). They have a great deal of information they can share with anyone who decides to attend this clinic.
Registration is at the door and here is the flyer.

International competition

This year the event will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico from September 22nd to 24th.
They will be the first competitors from the Coos Bay/North Bend area to compete internationally in Judo.
Good luck to both of you!
Senior Nationals
Congratulations to our competitors!
This weekend in Spokane, Washington, Shipyard Judo had three members (and instructors) representing our club at Senior Nationals. This was the first time for each member to compete at the national level.
Mike finished 2nd in the Veteran Male group 8, under 90kg division.
Brynn and Haley competed in four different kata (forms) divisions: Ju no Kata (Forms of Gentleness) in the Intermediate Category and the Under 33 Category, as well as in Nage no Kata (Forms of Throwing) in the same categories.
Haley and Brynn finished first in all four divisions and are now 4 time National Champions!
Grants Pass Scrimmage
The Grants Pass Scrimmage was held this weekend.
Sabrina, our only competitor, and Coach Clayton made the trek down to Grants pass.
It was a small turn out but it was a fun and fast-moving event.
Sabrina went 4-1 to take 1st in her division, Women’s Brown/Black Heavyweight.
Congratulations, Sabrina!
Obukan Tournament in Portland
This weekend was the annual Obukan Judo Tournament in Portland, Oregon. This was the first year back since 2019.
Friday night was the kata (forms) competition. Mariko and Sabrina competed in Katame no Kata (Forms of Grappling) and Brynn and Haley competed in both Nage no Kata (Forms of Throwing) and Ju no Kata (Forms of Gentleness). Coach Clayton was also drafted to be a judge for some of the kata.
Our teams swept the competition and won gold in all three events. Congratulations to all of you!
On Saturday the shiai (full contact) tournament was held. Brynn, Sabrina, and Jake all competed from Shipyard. Brynn and Haley’s older brother Liam was also competing, representing the Oregon State Judo team. All of our competitors came away with at least one medal.
Jake lost his first match but fought back to win 3rd in the novice men’s super-heavy (?) weight division.
Brynn split her matches to earn 2nd in the Cadet Girl’s Lightweight division.
Sabrina also split her matches to earn 2nd in the Black Belt Women’s Heavyweight division.
