Obukan Tournament Portland, OR March 24-25, 2023

We sent five of our competitors, Haley, Brynn, Jake, Sabrina, and Mariko, to represent Shipyard Judo at the annual Obukan Judo tournament in Portland, Oregon on March 24th and 25th. Coach Clayton, Coach Rob, and Coach Mike went to support our team.

The night before on March 24 was the kata (forms) competition. Each kata in Judo is performed by a team of two. Each kata represents certain aspects of Judo in addition to being a way to train certain techniques in a safe manner. Haley and Brynn competed in Nage no Kata (Forms of Throwing), Brynn and Haley competed in Ju no Kata (Forms of Gentleness), and Mariko and Sabrina competed in the Katame no Kata (Forms of Grappling). Our teams swept the competition and won all three events.

The next day at the combative competition, Sabrina, Brynn, and Jake competed in individual matches. Jake lost his first match but went on to win his next three matches to take third place in his division. Brynn won her first match but had a long second match that she ended up losing. She ended up taking second in her division. Sabrina was considerately outsized for each of her matches in the women’s open division but ended up going 1 and 2 to take second place.
